UNT president reads to sixth-graders in program to promote unity through reading
Posted by: Kelley Reese

President Gretchen M. Bataille will read a book about endangered miniature owls to sixth-graders at Crownover Middle School in Corinth as part of Denton Reads, a program to promote unity by reading and discussing books.

Bataille's reading of Carl Hiaasen's book "Hoot" will take place from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. April 25 at Crownover Middle School.

"This is an opportunity to instill in young people the importance of reading and earning an excellent education," Bataille says. "Reading and education are keys to a successful career and life."

Denton Reads, established in 2006, is a joint project of the Denton Public Library, UNT Libraries, Texas Woman's University Libraries and the Denton Independent School District.

Three books with environmental themes were chosen for various age groups this year. "Hoot" was chosen for intermediate readers, while Dr. Seuss' "The Lorax" was chosen for younger readers. For adults, this year's book selection is "The Legacy of Luna: the Story of a Tree, a Woman, and the Struggle to Save the Redwoods" by Julia Butterfly Hill.

Several events, including a xeriscaping workshop and film festival, have been held this month as part of the project. Denton Reads is part of the One Book, One Community project established in 1998 by the Washington Center for the Book.
